Aiden Draws Circles

Aiden’s scribbles have begin evolving. More than just random marks on a page, he’s begun to imitate clearly and will also leave the pen on the page to make circular motions. He can copy a straight line quite evenly as well.

Circular movements are the natural progression from scribbles as they are “most natural anatomically.”

Apparently, as far as “drawing development” goes, scribbling will evolve as children become more engrossed in what they do. Later, he may begin to name his scribbles, far before they have a discernible shape.

I love seeing what he comes up with, even if he does want to change markers every few seconds, lol

Crayola Bathtub Crayons Rock!

As you recall, I’ve spent months looking for the perfect bath crayons. I’ve looked high and low all over North Vancouver for crayons that draw easily and don’t crumble. Based on advice from you wonderful mamas, I knew that the regular Crayola crayons would be good, but it took me a while to find them! But I did! We grabbed the last package from Michaels!

I’d searched Michaels before, though probably they had been out at the time. For good reason – they are awesome!! As you can see in the photo, it is easy to draw with the Crayola Bathtub Crayons – they glide onto the surface easily without wasting bits of crayon everywhere. You can easily add fine details too.

FINALLY!

In Search of Tub Crayons that Don’t Suck

Dear world of amazing mamas,

Maybe you can help me? I’ve been looking for bath crayons that don’t suck. I love letting Aiden draw all over our tub and himself in the bath, but so far I’m dissatisfied with the products we’ve tried.

First up, we tried the TaDoodles ones – while they draw well, they run out quickly and are awkward (instead of easier) for Aiden to hold.

Next up, I decided to try the crayons that we see in basically all the toy stores – the ones by Alex. OMG, I have never used such HORRIBLE crayons before. Chunks of wax come off instead of marks of colour, most of the time, and you need to push hard.

Now, I know there are bathtub crayons from Crayola in regular format, but WHERE can I find them?? I have searched high and low!

So, dear wonderful Vancouver mamas – help us out! Have you found tub crayons that don’t suck??

Thanks,
A frustrated shopper

Skip the TaDoodles

I’ve been eager to get to the age where Aiden and I can sit and draw together. I love drawing and arts and crafts projects. We spend some time with crafts at playgroups, and Aiden’s interest is really starting to develop. When I saw that there were products designed to introduce younger toddlers to drawing, I jumped on board. We have 3 TaDoodles sets – crayons, markers and bath crayons. The only hit has been the bath crayons. The rest are basically worthless.

The TaDoodles forces Aiden to hold the marker in a particular way, and it seems rather unintuitive for him. Plus, it’s a completely different way of drawing than he will later use for markers & crayons, so what’s the point? His ability to grip fine things has been developed for months.

Ok, I get that the TaDoodles markers won’t dry out. But, at this age, Aiden isn’t drawing on his own and I can easily replace caps. Plus, the ink on those suckers was so profuse that it smudged all over the paper and onto his hands. Aiden has an easier time using real crayons vs TaDoodle crayons.

And while we’re on the topic of first art projects, markers are WAY easier for little toddler to use than crayons. Much more instant gratification. Look at the art that Aiden was able to create with his *first* experience with markers!!
